The Uganda Cranes team kicked off their CHAN 2021 campaign in group C against neighbours Rwanda in a goalless draw at the Stade de la Reunification in Yaounde.

Vipers’ midfielder Karim Watambala who was playing his first game at the tournament and expecting a win attributed the goalless draw to failure to create chances in front of goal.

While addressing the media, Watambala said he was expecting a win in their first game of the tournament.

“We expected a win in our first game against Rwanda but we did not get the result we wanted as we never got the most chances of scoring goals. We look forward to creating more chances in front of goal.”

Though the game ended in a draw, Watambala was delighted with playing his first game at the Championships and completing the 90 minutes of the game as he looks forward for more playing time.

“It has been my first game at CHAN and am so happy that I completed the 90 minutes against Rwanda, I have learnt so many things because as a young player. Whenever you play in big games you learn so many new things. Am looking forward to delivering the best in my second game if given the opportunity,” he said.

Uganda is now tied with Rwanda on one point as Morocco, the defending champions take a lead in Group C after a 1-0 win against Togo.

Uganda will play its second game against Togo on Friday 22nd January as Morocco will be up against Rwanda.
