Uganda’s U20 football team, the Hippos have qualified for the 2021 AFCON U-20 final tournament in Mauritania.
This was after they defeated the Rising Stars of Kenya 3-1 in the semi-finals of the 2020 CECAFA U20 tournament in Arusha, Tanzania on Monday afternoon.
Kenneth Ssemakula opened the scoring while, Ivan Bogere netted in each half as Uganda outcasted Kenya at the Black Rhino Academy Stadium.
Defender Ssemakula found the game’s opener in the 22nd minute off a well driven Najib Yiga corner kick before Bogere doubled the scoreline three minutes afterwards with a sublime finish to grant the Hippos a 2-0 halftime lead.
Ivan Bogere completed his brace from the penalty spot in the 63rd minute after Ismail Mugulusi was fouled in the forbidden. The forward stepped up and calmly placed the ball into the back of the net with Kenyan goalie Maxwell Mulili well beaten.
The Rising Stars of Kenya tried to stage a late comeback as they pulled a goal back in the 80th minute through Striker Enoch Wanyama but it wasn’t enough.
The Hippos have now progressed to the finals and have automatically qualified for the AFCON U-20 tournament in Mauritania next year.
