Busiro Ssaza have made a decisive statement of intent ahead of the forthcoming Masaza Cup campaign with the appointment of seasoned tactician Simon Ddungu, widely known as Dunga, as their new head coach. The move reflects a calculated effort by the 2022 champions to restore their competitive edge after a disappointing run in the most recent tournament.
Ddungu’s arrival marks a significant shift in Busiro’s technical direction, coming on the back of the team’s early exit at the group stage in the previous edition. That underwhelming performance ultimately led to the departure of Denis Kiyimba ‘Mulangira, whose tenure failed to build on the momentum of Busiro’s 2022 triumph.
For Busiro, the decision to entrust Ddungu with the reins is rooted in his extensive experience and proven success within the Masaza Cup ecosystem. Few coaches in the competition can match his track record. He first etched his name into the tournament’s history in 2017, guiding Gomba Ssaza to the title with a victory over Ssingo Ssaza. Seven years later, he reaffirmed his pedigree by leading Buddu Ssaza to glory in 2024, edging Kyaggwe Ssaza 1–0 in a tightly contested final at Mandela National Stadium.
Despite a recent setback during a short-lived stint with Gomba Ssaza in the 2025 campaign where he was dismissed after a poor run of results Ddungu’s broader body of work continues to command respect. His coaching journey spans multiple Masaza Cup sides, including Mawokota Ssaza (2013, 2019), Gomba Ssaza (2017), Buddu Ssaza (2018, 2024), and Ssingo Ssaza (2021, 2023). This breadth of experience has not only sharpened his tactical acumen but also given him a deep understanding of the unique dynamics and pressures of the competition.
Busiro’s recent struggles have underscored the need for a steady and authoritative hand. After their memorable title-winning campaign in 2022, expectations remained high, yet the team failed to sustain that level of performance. The inability to progress beyond the group stage in the last edition exposed gaps in consistency, squad cohesion, and tactical execution.
In Ddunga, Busiro are banking on a coach renowned for instilling discipline, structure, and resilience in his teams. His success has often been built on well-organized units capable of grinding out results in high-pressure situations an attribute Busiro will be eager to rediscover.
Beyond immediate results, the appointment also signals a longer-term vision. Busiro’s leadership appears intent on rebuilding a competitive identity anchored in experience, adaptability, and winning mentality. Ddungu’s familiarity with the Masaza Cup landscape positions him as an ideal figure to oversee that transition.
However, the challenge ahead is far from straightforward. The Masaza Cup continues to grow in competitiveness, with traditional powerhouses and emerging contenders alike raising their standards. For Ddungu, success at Busiro will depend not only on tactical expertise but also on his ability to quickly assess the squad, integrate new talent, and foster unity within the camp.
As the new season approaches, anticipation is already building among Busiro supporters. The expectations are clear, a return to serious title contention and a performance worthy of their status as former champions.
In appointing Ddungu, Busiro have opted for experience over experimentation, reliability over risk. Whether this strategic gamble pays off will unfold in the months ahead, but one thing is certain the 2022 champions have reignited their ambition, and under Dunga’s stewardship, they intend to compete at the highest level once again.
