Buganda Regional league match abandoned with fewer than the required number of players on the pitch

Fewer infield players saw the Lugazi derby being abandoned in the 80th minute of play during matchday 12 of the Buganda Regional league on Saturday 21st, December 2019 at Namagunga playground in Lugazi.

Lugazi Nabugabo was forced to start the match with only eight players as the rest had no valid licenses. During the match, there were 3 send-offs recorded with Lugazi Nabugabo FC having 2 and 1 for Lugazi Municipal FC.

Andabati Ronald (Lugazi Nabugabo FC) and Ssenyonjo Josep(Lugazi Municipal FC) were both shown straight Red Cards in the 67th minute for unsporting behavior after getting involved in a fight which eventually left the home team with only 7 infield players while Lugazi Municipal got reduced to 10.

Lugazi Nabugabo had another player shown marching orders in the 80th minute when defender Mayengo Gonzaga, who had received a yellow card earlier in the game received another after intentionally blocking a goal-scoring opportunity from Lugazi Municipal FC.

The referee was forced to abandon the game as the home team had remained with only six players.

What does the law say?

In the FUFA competitions rules, Article No.24(15) states that;

When the number of players of a team in A FUFA Competition match that are able to continue with play is less than seven (7) because of injuries or other reasons yet substitutions have been exhausted or are not available causing match officials to terminate the match, that team with the less number of players shall be deemed to have lost the match by forfeiture or by the
standing result of the match (whichever is sportingly better) to the opposing team unless a prudent justification
can be determined by the judicial body.

The game was 1-1 before it was abandoned with goals from James Okello who scored in the 32nd minute for Lugazi Nabugabo and Yasin Walusimbi who had scored for Lugazi Municipal in the 44th minute of the game.

We await the final decision from the FUFA Competitions Committee to determine the result from the game.
