Blacks Power FC pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the 51st Stanbic Uganda Cup, eliminating last year’s finalists NEC FC with a commanding 2-0 victory at the MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo.

Two second-half goals from Innocent Maduka and teenage sensation Joshua Omara sealed the win for the FUFA Big League side, sending them into the Round of 16.

NEC had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 51st minute when they were awarded a penalty. However, Paul Mucureezi’s spot-kick was controversially disallowed after he slipped and inadvertently struck the ball twice—a violation of the penalty kick rule. The referee initially appeared to award the goal but later overturned the decision following protests from Blacks Power players.

Maduka capitalized on NEC’s misfortune, breaking the deadlock in the 58th minute before Omara doubled the lead nine minutes from time, securing a famous victory for the underdogs.

The result shocked many, given NEC’s stature as a top-tier side and their deep run in last season’s tournament, where they finished as runners-up to Kitara FC.
