Uganda’s Joy Cheptoyek delivered a commendable performance that nearly secured her a spot on the podium at the Cursa dels Nassos road race in Barcelona, Spain on December 31, 2023.

Cheptoyek finished fourth just outside the medal bracket in a race that saw Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet(23) break women’s world 5km record with a 14 minutes 13 seconds time, knocking 16 seconds off Ethiopian Senbere Teferi’s women-only record set in 2021.

Chebet outpaced another Ethiopian on her way to the finish line, Ejegayehu Taye who came second and Lilian Kasait in 3rd to complete the Kenyan Sandwich.

Back in to October 2023, Cheptoyek etched her name in the Uganda’s record books by setting a National Record in the women’s 5km race at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Riga, Latvia. The same race was won by none other than Beatrice Chebet, who has now become a familiar rival for Cheptoyek.

In Riga, Cheptoyek’s impressive time of 14:50 marked the best-ever recorded by a Ugandan over the 5km distance. Although she finished sixth in that race.
