Beach Soccer AFCON 2021: Sand Cranes qualify for finals after Ghana pulls out

The Uganda National Beach Soccer team, The Sand Cranes have qualified for the 2021 AFCON Beach Soccer finals in Senegal this year after their opponents, Ghana, withdrew from taking part in the phase.

This comes after a few days when the Sand Cranes entered residential training at the FUFA Technical Center, Njeru.

Uganda was due to host Ghana for the first leg tie on 27th March 2020 at the FUFA Technical Center before the second leg which was scheduled to happen in Ghana in April.

This is the first time the Sand Cranes are qualifying for the finals since the championship was established in 2006 as a qualification route for African nations to an upcoming edition of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup.

The 2021 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup will be held in Russia and the winning and second-best African teams will qualify for the tournament

About the 2021 Beach Soccer AFCON 

The tournament was due to take place in Jinja, Uganda between 23 and 29 November 2020, however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and rising water levels on the shores of Lake Victoria affecting the hosting beach, Uganda withdrew from hosting the tournament. Senegal was subsequently chosen as the new hosts and the tournament rescheduled to between the 23 and 29 May 2021.

Uganda now joins Senegal (hosts) and Egypt as the only qualified teams to the 4th edition of the event.

Burundi, Comoros, Madagascar, DR Congo, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Libya, Morocco, Mozambique, Seychelles and Tanzania are still at the qualifying phase of the tournament.
