The Uganda Women’s National Football Team, The Crested Cranes has learnt their group stage opponents at the forthcoming 2022 Women’s African Cup of Nations. This follows the draw that was held on Friday in Rabat, Morocco.
The Crested Cranes have been pitted against hosts Morocco in group A. The other teams in the group are Senegal and Burkina Faso.
The Uganda team is returning to the AWCON for the first time since making their maideñ appearance in 2000 in South Africa.
To qualify for the finals, they eliminated Ethiopia in penalties after a 4-4 aggregate draw, before they secured their feat after their opponents Kenya withdraw from the last qualifying phase.
Meanwhile Group B will comprise of Cameroon,Zambia, Tunisia and Togo while Holders Nigeria are in group C with South Africa, Burundi and Botswana.
The four semi-finalists at the tournament, which will be held from 2-23 July, will automatically qualify for the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
Two other sides will enter a 10-team intercontinental play-off which will decide the final three spots at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
The 2020 edition of the Women’s Nations Cup was cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic. This year will be the first time the finals, which have been expanded from eight to 12 teams, will be held in Morocco.
Nigeria have won the past three Women’s Nations Cups and are record nine-time champions.
Equatorial Guinea, the only other side to claim the title, were eliminated by Tunisia in the second round of qualifying.
