The 2026 Absa Chairman’s Bell Golf Tournament got underway in style on Monday at the Uganda Golf Club, Kitante, with the inaugural Caddies Tournament taking centre stage.
For the first time in the tournament’s history, caddies were given their own competitive platform as part of an expanded four-in-one championship that now features the Caddies, Gross Amateurs, Professionals and the Main Event.
A total of 71 caddies teed off in the historic competition, which was introduced to recognise the invaluable contribution caddies make to the sport while also offering them an opportunity to showcase their talent and gain competitive exposure.
After an exciting day on the par-72 course, Basil Atinoi emerged victorious in the men’s category after returning a score of 1-over-par 73. Joweria Namanda was crowned the overall outstanding lady following an impressive round of 7-over-par 78.
The caddies competed for a dedicated prize kitty of UGX 2 million, with participants displaying remarkable skill and determination throughout the day.
Uganda Golf Club Caddie Master Ronald Akorabirungi, who also participated in the tournament, welcomed the initiative and praised Absa Bank Uganda for creating the opportunity.

“This is a dream come true for many of us. For years, we have been the unseen hands behind the game, and today Absa has given us a stage to show what we can do. It means everything to be recognised and to compete alongside fellow caddies who share the same passion,” he said.
Uganda Golf Club Chairman Paul Nuwagaba also applauded the introduction of the new category, noting that it further enriches the prestigious tournament, now in its eighth year under the sponsorship of Absa Bank Uganda.
“It’s important that we organise the whole system in which we play this game, and there are many facets including caddies who are very helpful but not just furniture on the course. We thank Absa for coming up strongly on this particular occasion as we continue growing the game and creating inclusive opportunities for all who are passionate about golf,” he noted.
The tournament now shifts focus to the Gross Amateurs and Professionals categories, which tee off on Tuesday with more than 250 participants expected to battle for honours ahead of Saturday’s highly anticipated Main Event.
Sponsored by Absa Bank Uganda with a total commitment of UGX 185 million, the week-long championship promises another memorable edition as some of Uganda’s finest golfing talents compete across the various categories.
