Albert Njogu wins Uganda Open 2025 after Changawa injury

The 2025 Uganda Open Men’s Singles Final, held at Lugogo Tennis Courts on center court, saw Albert John Njogu crowned champion after defending titleholder Ismael Changawa was forced to retire due to injury.

In a highly anticipated clash between two Kenyan rivals, Changawa entered the match as the favorite.

He started strong, winning the first two sets and leading 1–0 in the third. However, during a service motion, Changawa accidentally struck his previously injured knee with his racket — a knee on which he had surgery just a few months ago.

Fresh off a European tour with stops in Belgium and Spain, Changawa had hoped to successfully defend his crown. His early dominance made him appear on track, but the unfortunate incident cut his efforts short.

“I don’t want to say I was undone by my body — injuries happen,” Changawa said after the match. “I congratulate Albert.

We’ve played each other about nine times, and now, on the tenth, he’s finally beaten me.

It feels great to be in Uganda again, but it’s disappointing that I’ll miss the upcoming Davis Cup in two weeks.

Doctors have advised me to rest for at least three weeks. Still, I’ll keep my head high as always and plan to return to Uganda next year.”

In the semifinals, Changawa defeated Ernest Habiyambere, while Njogu secured his place in the final by overcoming David Manzi Rwamucho.

Ugandan players Simon Oyella and David Odong reached the quarterfinals but were eliminated at that stage.
