The Uganda Cranes got their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers off to a false start as they were beaten by Algeria 2-0 on Saturday in Algiers.

Youcef Belailli and Aissa Mandi netted the two most important goals for Uganda in a game that Farouk Miya missed a penalty for Uganda.

Algeria dominated proceedings from the onset and after certain attacks on the Cranes backline, they broke the deadlock in 28th minutes through Mandi who chested in from close range after Islam Slimani header bounced off the crossbar and into his path.

Few moments afterwards, Uganda had a chance to level matters from the spot after Khalid Aucho was fouled in the area but Miya put the resulting kick close to Mustapha Zeghba, the Algerian custodian.

Before the break, Uganda had Charles Lukwago to thank after he made two brilliant saves to deny Belailli and Adem Zorgane.

Despite the dessert foxes being dominant throughout the opening half, the game went into the break with Algeria leading by 1-0.

Uganda came back after restart a different side as they resolted to a pressing kind of approach that restricted Algeria to few chances upfront.

But with 10 minutes left on the clock, Algeria doubled their lead through Belailli sole effort. He drizzled past several Uganda Cranes players before guiding his effort onto the post and into the back of the net to make sure the game ended 2-0.

With the loss in Algiers, Uganda currently sits bottom of group F as the other group opponents ( Niger and Tanzania) played out to a 1-all stalemate.

Uganda will now hope for their first victory when they host Niger on Wednesday in their second game of the qualifiers.
