Glance At 2024: One of the Most successful Years in Ugandan Sport

In a year of the ultimate global sporting event, only a few could come close: Uganda had its 2nd best campaign at the games, Joshua Cheptegi’s historic 1,000M gold and Peruth Chemutai’s silver in the 3,000m steeplechase equaled 1972’s medal tally and a total of 13 Olympic medals.

However, Cheptegei announced that this was the last time we had seen him on track and he’d be shifting focus to the roads.

Just months after the Paris Olympics, News of the passing on of Rebecca Cheptegei(Not biologically related to Joshua) struck the country. Rebecca was set ablaze by her boyfriend.

The Cricket Cranes played at the T20 Cricket World Cup in USA and West Indies and won their first game in the competition defeating Papua New Guinea by 3 wickets and bowed out with loses against Afghanistan, West Indies, and New Zealand.

Previously, only two Uganda national teams had played at the World cup stage, netball and Ruby.

Football has had its fair share of highs and lows, Uganda Cranes returned to the Mandela national stadium after it was closed for renovation 4years ago.

This year also marked a return to the Africa Cup of Nations after missing out on the past two edition but they did it with swag.

Cranes qualified for the 2025 AFCON with two games to spare, the best ever qualification campaign, close to perfect but for a draw away to South Africa who also won the game in Namboole.

At club level, SC Villa were crowned champions for the 17th time, extending stamping their spot as record champions.

On the other side, cup winners Kitara FC will forever remember this season, this was their first ever major title and also elevated them to representing Uganda in the CAF Confederations Cup.

The game was also robbed off one of its greatest sons, Former cranes goalkeeping coach Fred Kajoba died in Tanzania where is was coaching by then.

She cranes returned to the Netball Africa Cup after missing out on the last edition due to leadership wrangles, they only finished second to South Africa who beat them in the finals.

There has also been some normalcy reinstated with the new sworn in leadership of Netball Uganda led by Joycelyn Ucanda.

City oilers, nicknamed ‘The Dictator’ by its opponents further asserted their dominance, wining a 10th consecutive National Basketball League.

A huge milestone, considering they’ve won all championships ever since their promotion in in 2013.
