Kampala University were left frustrated after being held to a 0-0 draw by YMCA Comprehensive Institute in the first leg of their Pepsi University Football League semifinal at FUFA Stadium, Kadiba.
Coming into the contest with home advantage and greater experience at this stage, KU were expected to seize control of the tie. Instead, they found themselves repeatedly frustrated by a disciplined and well-organized YMCA side that executed their game plan to near perfection.
Clear-cut chances were at a premium in a match dominated by cautious play and midfield battles. KU’s best opportunity fell to Mark Ebong in the first half, but his powerful effort was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Kelvin Ssenabulya, who ensured the visitors stayed level.
After the break, KU pushed forward in search of a breakthrough, but YMCA’s compact backline marshalled by captain Ratib Ramadan held firm under pressure. The visitors’ defensive resilience ensured they left Kampala with the tie finely balanced ahead of the return leg.
KU head coach Vincent Tumusiime expressed disappointment at full time, admitting his side had not met expectations, but remained confident of a turnaround in the second leg.
The match ended on a concerning note following a late collision between Gilbert Wanume and Jude Asiku, which forced both players off for medical attention and briefly halted play.
With the semifinal still wide open, focus now shifts to Buwambo, where YMCA will host the decisive second leg. The winner on aggregate will advance to the final to face either St. Lawrence University or Muteesa I Royal University.
