In a historic move to boost regional integration and ease of travel, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania have jointly announced the launch of the PAMOJA Visa, a single-entry visa that will allow seamless movement across the three East African nations. The announcement comes as preparations intensify for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which will be jointly hosted by the trio.
The new visa initiative, which was officially revealed on June 6, 2025, is expected to be operational before the start of CHAN, simplifying travel logistics for fans, tourists, and stakeholders attending the continental football tournament. The term “PAMOJA,” meaning “together” in Swahili, aptly captures the spirit of unity and cooperation behind the initiative.
Under the PAMOJA Visa framework, visitors will only need a single visa to access all three countries—eliminating the need for separate entry requirements and additional paperwork. The move is anticipated to boost tourism, stimulate local economies, and enhance the overall experience for CHAN participants and fans alike.
Uganda’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, highlighted the significance of the agreement during the announcement. “The Pamoja Visa is not just about football; it is about opening our borders, promoting regional cooperation, and making travel easy for everyone in East Africa.”
Tanzania’s Minister of Home Affairs, Hamad Masauni, emphasized the strategic importance of the initiative for regional development, while Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Kithure Kindiki, underscored the logistical advantages it offers ahead of CHAN 2024.
Beyond CHAN, the PAMOJA Visa is expected to lay the groundwork for a more integrated East African travel system, aligning with broader goals of the East African Community (EAC) to enhance mobility, trade, and socio-economic development.
As the CHAN tournament draws nearer, the PAMOJA Visa stands as a key symbol of regional collaboration, aiming to leave a lasting legacy well beyond the final whistle.
