  • Uganda 2-0 Ethiopia

The Crested Cranes took a significant step toward WAFCON 2026 qualification with a crucial 2-0 victory over Ethiopia’s Lucy at Nakivubo Stadium.

The win was anchored by a masterful performance from Zaina Namuleme, whose late heroics turned a cagey encounter into a decisive triumph.

In a match where clear-cut chances were rare, both teams struggled to break each other down in the first half.

Uganda suffered an early setback in the 29th minute when defender Bridget Nabisalu was forced off due to injury, leading to the introduction of Phiona Nabulime.

Despite efforts from Resty Nanziri, Fazila Ikwaput, and Namuleme, the Ethiopian defense held firm, keeping the game goalless at halftime.

Uganda intensified their attacking efforts in the second half, with Ikwaput coming closest to scoring, only to be denied by the Ethiopian goalkeeper.

Head Coach Sheryl Botes opted for a tactical reshuffle, bringing on Resty Kobusobozi and Agnes Nabukenya in a bid to inject fresh energy into the team.

Ethiopia, too, had their opportunities, but Uganda’s goalkeeper, Ruth Aturo, showcased her brilliance with key saves to keep the visitors at bay.

Just as the match seemed destined to end in a stalemate, Namuleme was fouled just outside the 18-yard box in the 89th minute.

Demonstrating composure and skill, she stepped up and curled a stunning free kick into the back of the net, sending the home crowd into jubilation.

With five minutes of stoppage time added, Ikwaput put the game beyond doubt, finishing clinically inside the box to secure a 2-0 win for Uganda.

The result gives the Crested Cranes a crucial advantage ahead of the return leg in Addis Ababa on February 26.

Namuleme’s commanding performance, highlighted by her match-winning goal, was instrumental in Uganda’s victory.

Uganda will prepare for the decisive second leg and her brilliance will be key in ensuring Uganda advances to the next qualification round.
