The historic Women’s 3-day match at Soroti City Oval ended in a thrilling draw yesterday, marking a significant milestone for women’s cricket in Soroti Cricket Academy and Uganda at large.
Soroti City East, after winning the toss and opting to bat, posted a modest total of 124 all out in their first innings.
Early breakthroughs from Soroti City West’s Amuge Kevin, who claimed two wickets in the first session, left Soroti East struggling at 15/2.
Despite a resilient 70 from Iloku Esther, Soroti East could not build significant partnerships and were eventually dismissed in 60.1 overs.
Alako Proscovia got 4 wickets on day one while Amuge Kevin and Lorna Anyait got two each.
By the close of Day 1, Soroti City West was 47/3, trailing by 77 runs, and their chase got off to a difficult start on Day 2.
Soroti City East’s bowlers kept the pressure on, reducing West to 65/5.
However, captain Marisa Ariokot’s determined 60 helped Soroti West reach 141/8 by lunch, eventually finishing with a 52-run lead after being bowled out for 176.
Soroti City East, in their second innings, began with renewed hope but found themselves at 55/6 by stumps, leading by just 3 runs.
On the final day, Soroti City East extended their lead to 67 runs by lunch, reaching 119/7, but with time running out, many felt they should declare early to set a target and force a result.
Soroti City West, needing 114 runs to win, fought valiantly but were 69/7 when time expired.
Both teams had their chances but could not complete their respective tasks.
In the end, the match ended in a draw, with both teams showcasing skill, resilience, and sportsmanship, making the match a historic and memorable event for women’s cricket in the region.
Iloku Esther was the top batter for Soroti City East, scoring 70 and 47, while Ariokot Marisa led Soroti City West with 74 and 21.
Kulume Phiona’s half-century helped East build a crucial 114-run lead on the final day.
Alako Proscovia and Amuge Kevin each took 6 wickets for Soroti City West, while Timong Patricia claimed 6 wickets and Janet Mbabazi took 4 for Soroti City East.
In post-match reactions, captains Janet Mbabazi and Marisa Ariokot expressed their joy and excitement, highlighting the significance of playing at their home turf in the heart of Soroti.
