The 2023 Masaza Cup sponsored by Airtel Uganda and Centenary bank kicked off on Saturday 24th June amidst huge numbers of football fans that flooged Wankulukuku .
On an afternoon filled great vibes accompanied by good weather, the three time champions of Mawokota dominated and thumped the defending champions of Busiro 3-1 at the Muteesa II Stadium- Wankulukuku.
The long awaited game that was graced by His Majesty the Kabaka of Buganda Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II who was largely missed by his people was an entertaining one as he opened the tournament with his magic left foot .
The top scorer of the previous edition, Akram Muzanyi opened his account for the reigning champions of Busiro in the current edition from a well converted penalty at the quarter mark of the hour(15th minute).
In a game dominated by Richard Malinga’s Mawokota boys it did take long to restore parity through Abu Mayanja in the 41st minute but was well deserved shortly before Kasolo made it 2-1 minutes later after a well taken shot outside the box.
Minutes later with a few seconds to halftime, Mawokota were conceded another penalty but their starman Akram put it up right wide over the goal posts to maintain the 2-1 scoreline.
In the second half, Busiro came back with a improved performance but it wasn’t enough to draw level with Malinga’s boys.
Late in the game, Emayo sealed Mawokota’s victory scoring the game’s fourth and third goal of the winning team to end the match 3-1 as a tired referee Musisi blew the final whistle.
Apart from the King of Buganda, the entertaining game attracted prestigious people like;
Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga, Minister for Youth, Sports and recreation in Buganda Kingdom Henry Ssekabembe Kiberu, Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga, Members of Parliament and different county chiefs.
Action in this group will resume as Busiro will visit Kabula on 8th July as Mawokota host Gomba on 9th July at Buwama Grounds.
