2023 FIBA Women AfroBasket: Gazelles storm Quaterfinals for the first time

Uganda Women’s National basketball team, the Gazelles, have made history after they beat DR Congo and qualified for the quarterfinals of the Women Afrobasket on Tuesday at the BK Arena.

The Gazelles oozed with confidence as they matched a physical DR Congo side to put them out of the tournament on a 78-62 score board result.

In a game that was tied up at ( 30-30 ) at halftime, the girls were sure of pulling out the result as they pushed so hard to pull out a 53-45 result in the third quarter with a special mention to an Abby Priscilla 3 point shot that sent the fans ablaze.

Experienced Claire Lamunu contributed a double double of 12 points and 14 rebounds was the Lady of the day as she earned the most points for Uganda.

Jane Asinde who didn’t have the best opening half of the finished with 18 just like small forward Jannon Otto Jaye.

In this game both Evelyne Nakiyinji and Ritah Imanishimwe made their debuts at the Afribasket.

The win pushes the Gazelles’ to two wins at the tournament beat 11-time winners Senegal earlier in group G to meet DR Congo.

As known earlier Uganda will play the hosts Rwanda (who topped their group) in the quarterfinal on Wednesday.

Two KCCA midfielders sent out on loan.
