Uganda Women’s National Basketball team, the Gazelles, have finished 7th at the FIBA Women’s Basketball tournament at the Kigali Arena in Rwanda on Friday.
This is the best they ever achieved at the tournament and all came to pass after they thumped Guinea 85-44 in a classification game.
In 1997, the Gazelles finished 9th while in 2015, they finished 10th after edging Algeria 75-73 something that shows progress of the girls at the tournament.
After the game in a post match press conference Alberto Antuna called upon the Ugandan government to invest in women’s basketball;
“We played good basketball coming back to the Women AfroBasket for the first time in nine years. For us leaving the tournament after making history is something we are proud of.”
“Being able to win today and seeing the fans smiling, it has probably been the best way to finish the tournament.”
“The next step is investment in women’s basketball. FUBA and Ugandan Government should invest in the game to ensure the game can grow and these girls deserve to play professional basketball and earn from the game.”
