The President of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has given green light to sports events to resume provided they follow the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) provided by the Ministry of Health.
Museveni made the pronouncement during the State of the Nation address on Covid-19 on Sunday evening at the State House in Entebbe.
“Sports can re-open provided there are no spectators and the players are tested for Covid-19, 72 hours before. This test will expire in 14 days. Hence, the Sportsmen will have to repeat the test every fortnight.”
“Sportsmen and women should remember that masks shouldn’t be worn when you are engaged in straining exercises. With tournaments, teams should be quarantined for the whole season of the competition.”
But, Indoor sports are not allowed to resume.
“Indoor sports activities including Gyms remain closed, those indoor things are very dangerous because that’s where the virus spreads.”
It should be remembered that it’s now 186 days since the president instilled a ban on all public gatherings on 18th March 2020.
However, following a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Museveni was advised to let sports resume, but without fans.
