Vipers Sports Club advanced to the Uganda Cup semi-finals after defeating NEC FC 4-3 in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw at MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, on Good Friday.
In a tight and cagey quarter-final, both sides failed to find the net across 90 minutes, with chances few and far between. NEC came closest in normal time through Wandera’s set pieces, while Vipers threatened late on through Yunus Sentamu.
With the clock ticking to full time, goalkeeper Denis Kiggundu made a vital double save to keep Vipers in the contest and force penalties.
In the shootout, NEC faltered early as Warren Buule hit the crossbar and Pius Obuya’s effort was saved. Vipers converted four of their spot-kicks through Abdul-Karim Watambala, Sentamu, Hilary Mukundane, and captain Milton Karisa, whose calm finish sealed the victory despite Enock Luyima’s miss.
The win sends Vipers into the semi-finals as the race for the Uganda Cup intensifies.
