U17 AFCON/ CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers: Oscar Mawa superb as the Cubs thrash Kenya

Striker Oscar Mawa netted a hat-trick as the Uganda Cubs thrashed Kenya in their first game of the 2020 CECAFA U17 championship at the Umuganda Stadium in Rubavu, Rwanda

The other goals were scored by Travis Mutyaba and Ronald Madoi as Uganda secured a convincing 5-0 win over their East Africa rivals

Mawa broke the deadlock as early as the 7th minute when he met Vicent Mulema’s deflected cross to grant Uganda a slender first half lead

Five minutes into the second half, Mawa got his second of the game when he headed from a rebound past Kenyan goalie Alvin Lwangu after his initial effort was saved.

The youngster completed in the 54th minutes after Mutyaba’s wonderful ball found Mawa in the box and the forward did no mistake than to put it into the back of the net.

Mutyaba iced up his performance with a goal after pounced on the ball in the 78th minute after reckless Kenyan defending.

Five minutes from time, Uganda had their fifth after a well taken Enock Luyima corner found Madoi in the six yard box to slot it into the back of the net.

This win takes Uganda to three points while Kenya who drew their first game against Ethiopia sit last in group A with just a point.

The Cubs will face Ethiopia on Friday afternoon to find out who tops the group.

This tournament serves also a qualifier to the AFCON U17 tourney in 2021, so  two finalists will qualify for next year’s tourney in Morocco.
