The Uganda Cubs head coach Hamza Lutalo is targeting victory in the first game of 2020 U17 AFCON/CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers in Rwanda.

The Uganda U17 national team will begin their title defence on Saturday, 11th December 2020 when they battle a stubborn South Sudan side at the Umuganda Stadium in Rubavu, Rwanda.

The Busoga United tactician is optimistic that his side can defend the title they won last year at the FUFA Technical Center, Njeru.

“We have played with these teams in various CECAFA tournaments and we emerge as champions of the CECAFA region. Our main aim is to defend the title we won last year in Tanzania,” said Lutalo ahead of the Cubs opening game on Saturday.

“We expect a good game tomorrow as we urge for support from all Ugandans especially those in Kampala for a win against South Sudan,” he added.

When asked about coach the team’s preparations for the tournament during this moment rattled by the Coronavirus crisis, he said the team has undergone the necessary preparatory tests and safe practices;

“It has been a very long journey since the day we entered camp at Kabojja up to where we are, we have gone through several covid tests as a team and the MRI tests for the players. The same happened when we came to Rwanda as we underwent covid testing and the MRI but we thank God for our health as we successfully went through that.”

Uganda is drawn in group A along with Kenya, South Sudan and Ethiopia. The hosts Rwanda are in group B with Tanzania and Djibouti.

All games will be played at Umuganda Stadium in Rubavu district – Rwanda.
