Yunus Sentamu scored the lone goal as the defending champions, Vipers SC edged past a resilent UPDF FC at the St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on Saturday evening.
The January recruit was on target in the 83rd minute to propel his side to an important win over the army side.
The first attempt at goal fell to the visitors in the 7th minute when Sam Kintu reacted on Paul Willa’s loose header but his effort just above the bar
In the 14th minute, Vipers got their first attempt on goal after Allan Kayiwa was fouled just outside the box. Yunus Sentamu stepped but his effort was easily saved by the UPDF Wasswa Yusuf
From the defensive error, Kayiwa somehow found his way into the box unmarked, squaring the ball past the on rushing goalie but no venom player was well placed to put the ball into an empty net.
The army side then had two brilliant chance to break the deadlock after right back Joseph Vuni bullet shot from inside went just few meters above the crossbar in the 30th minute before Zzinda Hussein sent his freekick straight to Denis Kiggundu in the 39th minute.
Having introduce on David Bagoole for Allan Kayiwa at halftime, Fred Kajoba’s side came back for the second half the better side imposing alot of pressure on the UPDF backline, and through Sentamu, they came close to finding the opener but he rattled his effort over the bar after a wonderful interplay with Daniel Sserukuma to put Sentamu through on goal with just the UPDF goalie to beat.
Moments later, Joseph Dhata tried his luck from outside the box but his effort was comfortably saved by Wasswa in the 63rd minute.
Six minutes afterwards, Paul Mucurezi, who came on Karim Watambala wasted a glorious chance to put Vipers when he volleyed his shot above the crossbar after he met Sentamu’s headed effort at the far post.
UPDF went a man down in the 76th minute when Isa Mubiru was handed his matching orders for a second bookable offence after a tackle on Disan Galiwango
In the 83rd minute, Vipers finally got the goal they deserved when a long throw in by Joseph Dhata was headed it to back of the net by Sentamu who rose high to guide the ball past Wasswa in UPDF’s goal.
Davis Kasirye had a chance to pull his side level in the closing five minutes of the game but the former Vipers player failed to connect well with a Kabuye cross to put his effort meters wide
The three points garnered by Vipers takes the Venoms top of the StarTimes Uganda Premier league log on 14 points collected in six games while UPDF move a place down in 3rd on 12 points.
