StarTimes UPL: Aheebwa strikes on debut as KCCA FC defeat Soltilo Bright Stars in opener

KCCA FC defeated Soltilo Bright Stars

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) FC have defeated Soltilo Bright Stars FC 2-1 in the opening game of the 2020/21 StarTimes Uganda Premier League.

Two first-half goals by debutant Brian Aheebwa and Sam Ssenyonjo were enough to inspire the Kasasiro Boys past the resilient Bright Stars in a game played at Kavumba recreation grounds on Thursday evening.

Bright Stars got the first attempt of the game when KCCA FC gave away a freekick about 25 yards from the goal in the 6th minute but Joseph Janjali’s effort on goal was easily caught by Charles Lukwago.

In the 21st minute, Brian Aheebwa fired home his first of the game after a loose ball that was kicked in his way by Keziron Kizito.

Five minutes later, the yellow boys doubled their lead following some clinical dribble from debutant and goal scorer Aheebwa to beat Derrick Ngobi and set up Sam Ssenyonjo in the 27th minute.

In the 32nd minute, the hosts were denied a goal by Lukwago when he parried away Suleiman Ssebunza’s freekick into the corner after Italian Stephen Mazengo’s handball just outside the box.

The game went into the halftime break with the Kasasiro Boys holding a 2-0 lead over the hosts.

At the beginning of the second half, KCCA FC head coach Mike Mutebi brought on Juma Balinya and Charles Lwanga for Sam Ssenyonjo and Ashraf Mugume respectively while, on the other end, Bright Stars introduced Augustine Kacancu for Jamil Nvule Kisitu.

It was at that moment that Bright Stars started making a number of attempts in the second half after Joseph Akandanwanaho thought he had found the back of the net but defender Iguma Denis made a late-minute clearance off the line.

Twelve minutes from time, Bright Stars got a consolation goal through Akandanwanaho after Charles Lukwago parried a freekick back into play and the resulting cross landed on the forward’s head.

KCCA FC now takes a lead on the table with 3 points and will play Onduparaka FC next, while Bright Stars will battle URA FC away from home next week.
