StarTimes UPL: Advantage Vipers as KCCA, Villa lose

Vipers SC have closed the gap between them and the top two on the StarTimes Uganda Premier League log after defeating UPDF 1-0 in Bombo.

The Venoms are now eight points below leaders SC Villa and just three points below second- placed KCCA after having played a couple of games less. Both Villa and KCCA lost 1-0 in their games against Arua Hill and URA FC respectively.

To the match against UPDF, Goalkeeper Derrick Were scored into his own goal in the early minutes of the game to help Vipers secure a vital hard-fought victory.

Apart from Were’s own goal, Vipers struggled to break down the Army side with their only other goalscoring attempts falling to Abubakar Lawal, who had his attempt cleared off the line by Christopher Kawagu.

UPDF was fashioned the game’s best chances but failed to score. Badru Jibril Nsimbe had his attempt cleared off the line by Hillary Mukundane while Samson Kasozi hit the woodwork with a header following Douglas Oyirwoth corner kick.

Rashid Faridi also had a chance late on for UPDF, but Vipers substitute Rogers Torach deflected it out to save his team.

Vipers will play on-form URA next on Saturday at St. Mary’s Stadium while UPDF will battle Maroons on Tuesday in Luzira.
