KCCA FC booked their place in the Round of 16 of the Stanbic Uganda Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Mbarara City Football Club at the MTN Omondi Stadium.
Defender Filbert Obenchan scored the decisive goal just before halftime, heading home a well-delivered free kick from Ashraf Mugume to separate the two sides in a tightly contested encounter.
KCCA started brightly, with Shafik Kwikiriza and Umar Lutalo both testing Mbarara goalkeeper Emukule early on. At the other end, Mutwalibi Mugolofa produced a key save to deny Kanyike Muhamad and keep the hosts level before the breakthrough.
The second half was physical, with cautions issued to Lutalo, Reagan Matege and Bironse Malik, as Mbarara pushed for an equaliser. KCCA thought they had doubled their lead late on through Bright Anukani, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
The 1-0 victory confirms KCCA’s progression to the last 16, as they now turn attention to the StarTimes Uganda Premier League with an away fixture against Buhimba United Saints Football Club on Monday, March 2.
