Shakira Nassaka named player of the year in the Uganda Netball Federation awards.

Goal defender Shakira Nassaka of Weyoje Netball Club was on Tuesday night named the Best Player of the Season at the first edition of the Uganda Netball Federation Awards at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.

The event attended by the State Minister for Sports Hon Hamson Obua was the Chief Guest ran under the theme ‘Celebrating Uganda’s Finest Netball Personalities.’

Nassaka who is the captain at Kampala University beat off stiff competition from teammate Asinah Kabendela and Margaret Bagala of NIC Netball team.

Before cutting down the list to three, Stellah Oyella – NIC and Norah Lunkuse – KCCA were on the initial five-player shortlist.

Nassaka who has only played for two teams in her career (UPDF and Weyonje). She has now spent two years at Weyoje. 

“This means a lot to me. I have to continue working hard. I have worked for this and I thank my fellow teammates as well,” briefly commented an excited Nassaka

On the other hand, Bashir Matovu who plies his trade at SMASH beat Mishali Ssebuliba and (International), Richard Epa(Kampala University) , John Kizito ( Kampala University) , Dissan Wasswa (WOB) , Bosco Yiga ( Blue Stars Magpies) and Moses Mugisha (Prisons)

State Minister of Sports Hamson Obua congratulated the Federation, athletes, coaches and Stake holders. 

“I congratulate the leadership of Uganda Netball Federation, athletes, Coaches and key stakeholders and those supplementing the efforts of Government to make the sport of Netball a success.” he said

“I congratulate Uganda Netball Federation because we have a big championship coming up and that’s the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Our national team has made history as the champions of Africa on various occasions and who are we not to thank God. There are many nations who have failed to achieve success despite enormous Government funding.” he added

“I bring you greetings from Maama (The first lady), she says thank you for being a good student, out of the 51 Federations, you are one of the best presidents. I want to recommend publicly that in addition to all the Corporate companies coming on board, if there is still any doubt that Netball in Uganda is not alive and kicking, your answer lies in this Ceremony. I give an open invitation and recommendation to other sponsors to join UNF.”he concluded 

Before the end of the night the Uganda Netball Federation president Sarah Babirye hard a few words to put across mostly notably;

“This is just the beginning, they should expect these awards every year. We are here to nurture talent and develop Sports in this Country.”

The other sport dignitaries that were present at the event were NCS Chairman Dr. Donald Rukare, chairperson board of trustees Margret Nantongo Zziwa, She Cranes Coach Fred Mugerwa Tabale, Boxing Federation President Moses Muhangi, Table Tennis President Robert Jjagwe and Football administrator Ben Misagga.

Female Player of the year – Shakirah Nassaka (Weyonje)

Male Player of the year- Bashir Matovu ( SMASH )

Promising Player of the year – Sandra NAMBIRIGE (KCCA) 

Most improved Player of the year – Shadiah Nassanga (KCCA) 

Best top scorer of the year – Asinah Kabendela (Weyonje) 

Best coach of the year – Vincent Kiwanuka (NIC)

Fair Play Award- Air Force team.

(UNF Umpiring Committee)  Presidential Award Award. – Rebecca Kavulu

Best UNF Employee award-Jackson Kayira(Head of Media)

Women Second Division – Greater Busia Netball team

Men Division – Kampala University.
