KCCA FC returned for the second round of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League on a positive, condemning bogey-side Mbarara City to 1-0 defeat at the StarTimes Stadium, Lugogo on Wednesday.
The 13-time champions had not beaten Mbarara City in all their five meetings and just needed a win in the 6th to exact revenge against the Ankole Lions. A 1-0 win they got, continuing to pile pressure on leaders Vipers SC.
Mike Mutebi assembled a slightly different team without the team’s marquee players, Allan Okello and Mustafa Kizza who have been sidelined since reports of the ‘need to move on’ from the club started emerging.
‘The gaffer’ started Herbert Achai and Joseph Kafumbe in the place of Mustafa Kizza and Allan Okello respectively and had only 5-substitutes as opposed to the official seven with a number of players unavailable for the day due to rebellion and suspension.
Without the ‘contract rebels’ Mike Mutebi’s side struggled to get their plan B working as it was evident the crosses were never going to come without their main orchestrator
Herbert Achai’s show started on the left side of defense but failed to perform to expectation and was later moved into midfield for Hassan Musana.
Still, the breakthrough was not about to come until that moment Muzamir Mutyaba (who was enjoying the free role in Okello’s absence) delivered a pinpoint cross which Obenchan nodded in for the only goal of the game.
Erisa Ssekisambu had twice missed 1st half sitters against a rather shaky Mbarara defense whose coach Brian Ssenyondo surprisingly kept Ivan Eyam and Jude Ssemugabi on the bench until he started feeling the shadow of defeat looming over his head.
The hero of the day was fringe defender Filbert Obenchan (a second-half substitute for Musa Ramathan) who separated the two sides with a towering header to the far post.
The win means KCCA FC beat Mabara City for the first time in six meetings having suffered the first defeat in the encounter in this season’s first-round at the Kakyeka Stadium.
KCCA FC is now just a point away from leaders Vipers SC while Mbarara City sits 8th on the StarTimes Uganda Premier league log.
KCCA FC takes on Bright Stars in their next match on Tuesday next week while Mbarara City hosts Wakiso Giants.
