Police tame Mbabazi’s Wakiso Giants to drift away from relegation

Police FC beat Wakiso Giants 2-1 at the Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium to go a point away from the relegation zone in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.

Before the visit to Wakiso, Police FC was lying 15th but thanks to goals from Ben Ocen and Samson Kigozi, the Kops were able to fight-off the home side’s resistance to go appoint clear of the relegation zone.

Police FC who spent the entire first round in the red-zone took the lead in the 4th minute when Ben Ocen received a ground pass from Arafat Galiwango to fend off an onrushing Fahad Kawoya before poking in the ball amidst a multitude of defenders.

This was the Police FC forward’s 10th goal of the season and now trails Maroon’s Steven Mukwala by just 1 in the chase for the Top scorer’s gong.

The home side swiftly responded moments later with Sserunkuma scoring his first league goal of this season when he struck from within the penalty area after the defenders failed to clear a loose-ball that followed Fahad Kawooya’s free-kick that came from about 60-yards deep in the 11th minute.

1-1 it was at halftime – the second half too brought nothing any better for the home side. Substitute Ruben Kimera who came on for Pius Kagwa lazily powered past 3 Wakiso Giants defenders before sending in a cross that found Samson Kigozi unmarked to head in the winner in the 68th minute.

Soon the search for solutions became more evident with Livingstone Mbabazi who was taking charge of his first game at his new club.

The former Mbarara City and Onduparaka FC coach made 2 changes withdrawing Hakim Ssenkumba and Ivan Kiweewa for Yasin Mugume and Ivan Ssebuguzi respectively while Karim Ndugwa was introduced later for Sserunkuma.

The win means Police FC becomes the first team to complete a double against the Purple sharks having beaten the debutants by the same score earlier in the first round.

Police FC are now 13th on the StarTimes Uganda Premier League table with 15 points while Wakiso Giants remain 8th with 18 points.

Wakiso Giants will travel to Bombo on Wednesday, where they will face Mbarara City for their next game, while on the same day, Police will host Express at StarTimes stadium, Lugogo.
