The year 2023 will be remembered in history as the one that produced the highest of moments for the game of Netball in Uganda but sadly, the same year has produced misery upon the game beyond any other.
In April this year, Uganda was confirmed as the 2023 Netball Africa Cup Hosts but later lost the hosting rights to Botswana.
The tournament started on November 26th but Uganda had withdrawn. While speaking on the floor of parliament, state minister for sport Hon. Peter Ogwang had this to say following the age cranes’ absence on the continental showpiece.
“The normalization committee in consultation with world Netball agreed that the She cranes should not participate in the Africa Netball championships 2023.”
Ogwang continued and said “Malawi and South Africa withdrew and therefore Uganda’s Participation would have no effect in terms of ranking since Uganda is ranked number one in Africa and will participate in Wales and England where it can increase its rankings.”
However the She Cranes were earlier invited by England to the Vitality Netball Nations Cup which will take place in January 2024.
Netball powerhouses like Australia and New Zealand, will be some of the other participants.
Ogwang also said that the funds which were meant to facilitate the team at the continent showpiece will be diverted to the England trip.
