Onyango announced his retirement last month with 79 caps to his name since making his international debut in 2005 against Cape Verde.

He is remembered for his tremendous contribution to Uganda national team, as he led The Cranes to two Total Africa Cup of Nations finals (Gabon 2017 and Egypt 2019), as well as winning the CAF Africa player of the year award based in Africa in 2016, having guided Mamelodi Sundowns to their first Total CAF Champions League title.
