The 2020 Masaza cup edition has been highly affected by the Covid 19 pandemic which has seen the tournament stretch out till the year 2021. Gomba, the record champions will take on Buddu in the final on the 6th of March 2021 at the St. Mary’s stadium Kitende as announced by Buganda Kingdom.
The final and third-place playoff were initially slated to take place on the 23rd January 2021 at the FUFA Technical centre in Njeru, but due to an increase in the covid cases amongst the team camps, both games were called off and pushed to a new date which has been announced today 9th February 2021 by the Buganda sports Minister Owek. Henry Ssekabembe Kiberu at Bulange Gardens, Mengo.
A limited number of fans will be allowed to watch the final games of the Tournament and those willing to turnup have been urged to observe and keep the Standard Operating Procedures for their own safety.
“We are delighted that as the Buganda Kingdom to announce the date of 6th March 2021 for the final and third-place playoff matches at the St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende. I thank the organizing team, all Masaza teams, sponsors, partners and all the media houses,” Ssekambembe said.
The organizing committee chairman Sulaiman Sejjengo also thanked the Buganda Kingdom and the sponsors who have stood by them from the first day the tournament kicked off amidst the covid-19 pandemic. He has also hinted on the various cases they received during the competition in Njeru.
“We had a total of 540 people tested for the Coronavirus. 360 of these were team players and officials with the rest members of the organizing team and the media,” he said.
The tournament has so far seen a total of 93goals scored just at the semi-final round. Charles Bbaale of Gomba tops the scorers log with 7goals on to his name.
This year’s third-place playoff will be a repeat of the 2019 Final as Busiro takes on Bulemeezi in a revenge mission. Bulemeezi won the 2019 title by defeating Busiro 1-0 in the final.
