Kiplimo secures Gold at the World Athletics Cross Country Championship in Belgrade


Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo has won gold in the senior Men’s race at this year’s World Athletics Cross country championships in Belgrade, Serbia today.

He now joins an elite class of previously only three men who had defended this title, Ethiopian legend Kenenisa Bekele and the two Kenyans Geoffrey Kamworor and Paul Tergat.

Having won gold last year in Bathurst, Australia during in this same race. “It actually feels more exciting to successfully defend my title than to win the first one,” said Kiplimo.

Kiplimo has never missed the Podium in these championships after that Gold triumph at home soil in the U20 men’s race in Kololo.

He had a debut to remember in the senior men’s race two years later when he only came second to fellow countryman Joshua Cheptegei to win Silver in Denmark which he has now accompanied with two Golds.

Cheptegei on the other hand lost momentum during the last lap and finished in 6th place.

“No medal, but it was a good test before the Paris summer.” – Cheptegei on his performance today.

“My goal this year is to do what Joshua Cheptegei did and win an Olympic gold.”

”Thé main focus is the 10,000m, but I’m not sure yet if I want to double.” Said Kiplimo who had just enough time to start his celebrations before crossing the finish line as he raced clear of Ethiopia’s Berihu Aregawi and the Kenyan, Benson Kiplangat who won Silver.

Kiplimo’s was the only individual medal and a silver team in the same race made a total of two medals for team Uganda from the 4 races on the day.
