Referees are like any other athlete. They are physically engaged in a football match and they equally need to be compensated for the energy and wisdom they use to officiate football matches.
Yesterday, May 27, 2020, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) cashed out 609M to clear the referees’ arrears for 2019/20 season, but hey? Did you know the dividend each referee around the country gets from the bigger bag?
Well, the sum might look big on paper but do you know what and how much each referee received? I guess not. The Touchline Sports takes you through the status of the share each referee can get from the ‘big sum’.
Also, note that referees can be deployed across all five divisions of the FUFA Football Competitions as deemed necessary. This may have an impact on the overall dividend a given referee gets to receive from the share.
We break down the amounts each deployment can fetch a referee as per the respective divisions of the FUFA Football Competitions.
StarTimes Uganda Premier League
Each StarTimes UPL game is handled by five-match officials, a Center Referee, 1st Assistant Referee, 2nd Assistant Referee, 4th Official, and a Referee Assessor. Each of these receives a total of 150,000 Uganda Shillings per match with no transport allowances.
StarTimes FUFA Big League
In the StarTimes FUFA Big League, each match official is entitled to receive 70,000 Uganda Shillings per game with transport allowances from FUFA for each individual.

Unlike the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Divisions, the 4th and 5th division referees are paid by the home teams at the district level.
Speaking of the 607M that FUFA released for referees, each referee earned according to the games he or she officiated in the different competitions under FUFA.
