FUFA third Vice President Hon. Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi has written a letter to the FUFA President Moses Magogo calling for the cancellation of the 2020/21 StarTimes Uganda Premier league.
In a letter dated 17th June after the presidential speech where all sports activities were suspended for 42 days by His Excellence President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, Nakiwala said she moves the motion for the league go be cancelled in the spirit of safety of the players and stakeholders.
“The Covid-19 pandemic has hit every sector across the world so hard, Uganda hasn’t been a exception especially in the sports sector.” The letter read in parts
“In as much as the president in his recent speech approved sports to co ntinue but only under strict guidelines and S 0.Ps it’s evident across th e country especially in the first and second tiers of Uganda’s top flightl eague,the fans due to their love to the beautiful game have not adh ered to the S.O .Ps making to extremely difficult to continue having league matches under the current circumstances.”
“I’d like to move the motion that theleague be cancelled at this stage since all clubs have played up to 75% of their games as per the FUFA competitions committee rules, I believe In the spirit of safety this would certainly be the Ideal decision to make.”
“Vipers SC won the league last season under those circumstances and wi th five games to spare whichIsn’t the case today (four to go).”
Nakiwala represents Uganda Premier League Clubs at FUFA General Assembly, a position she initially got back in 2017 when she beat Diana Nyago
Currently Express FC sit top of the StarTimes Uganda Premier league log and if the league is prematurely ended, they will declared winners for their first league title since 2011-12 season .
Last season, Vipers were declared winners for their fourth time in history after managing to hold onto the lead, despite having five games left to play.
