FIFA U20 WWCQ: Hadijah Nandago hands Uganda slim advantage over South Africa

Midfielder Hadijah Nandago netted the lone goal as the Uganda U20 Women’s National Team defeated South Africa in a World Cup qualifier first leg game played at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.

Nandago strike came midway the opening half to give Uganda a slight advantage ahead of the second leg in two weeks.

Uganda dominated the opening half proceedings and almost went ahead early as the seventh minute but Sumaya Komuntale’s shot was parried away for a corner by Ntahiseng Ramaisha.

Uganda continued to pile pressure on the South Africa defense in the early exchanges and rattled the crossbar in 12th minute- Aisha Nantongo agonizingly striking the bar with Ramaisha left helpless.

Juliet Nalukenge also had an attempt at goal saved in the 19th minute.

From a corner, Uganda finally found the opener, which also ended up as a winner after Nandago headed in a brilliantly taken Shakira Nyinagahirwa’s kick to hand Uganda the lead.

South Africa’s first realistic chance at goal fell to Wendy Shongwe but her header hit the upright and went out of play.

Before the break, South Africa would have leveled matters but Chelsea Joy Daniels headed wide after a Shongwe cross.

Uganda managed to maintain their 1-0 lead at the break

South Africa returned for the second half a different side and dominated most of the proceedings.

But they struggled to create enough meaningful chances to put scores level.

Their best chance came in the 76th minutes after Joy Daniels went through on goal but Nyinagahirwa made a last ditch tackle to kick the ball to the corner and deny the South African forward.

South Africa almost scored from the resulting cornerkick but Sumaya Komuntale cleared the ball off the line after Daphne Nyayenga had failed to deal with the teasing kick.

Uganda stood on their toes and defended their 1-0 lead to take slight advantage into the return leg which will be played on 17th December in South Africa.
