FIFA is supporting the development of women coaches in Uganda with scholarships for 30 coaches to undertake the CAF C Coaching Course in partnership with the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA).
The residential course started on August 17 at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru and is being conducted under FIFA’s Women’s Football Development Programme.
The initiative is aimed at giving more Ugandan women access to formal coaching qualifications and opening the door to technical roles in football.
The course has attracted coaches, as well as former and current players looking to move into coaching. They are undergoing theoretical and practical training to improve their technical knowledge, coaching skills and understanding of the modern game.
The CAF C qualification provides a foundation for coaches working in grassroots football, youth teams, academies, schools and clubs, while also helping former players make the transition into coaching.
FUFA applied for the scholarships after FIFA invited its Member Associations to nominate candidates under the Women’s Football Development Programme- Coach Education Scholarships. The applications were approved by FIFA.
The 30 CAF C scholarships are part of a wider investment that has seen 39 Ugandan women enrolled for coaching courses at different levels through FUFA programmes.
Four women are currently pursuing the CAF B qualification: Nakiguba Cissy Gaudensia of the Women National Teams, Nabulobi Mercy of Sparta 09 Academy, Namugenyi Dorothy of URA FC Juniors and Birungi Sarah of Kikajjo Stars Sports Academy.
At CAF A level, Sharifah Nantumbwe, Jean Namayiga Sseninde, Sharon Kizza, Faridah Bulega and Oliver Mbekeka are pursuing the CAF A Coaching Diploma.
The three levels provide a clear pathway for Ugandan women to progress from entry-level coaching to the highest CAF qualification.
FUFA hopes the investment will produce a larger pool of qualified female coaches ready to take up technical and leadership roles in women’s football, youth development, academies and national teams.
