FIFA 2022 World Cup Qualifiers: How Uganda has fared against other Group E opponents

Uganda Cranes was pitted in group E with neighbors Kenya, Rwanda and Mali for the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

As we await the start of the qualifying games, here is some useful information we thought that you might need to know about Uganda’s Group E opponents.

1. Mali

The leg Aigles as they are nicknamed, have never qualified for any World Cup finals in their history. They are currently coached by Mohamed Magassouba and are ranked 56th in the world, 9th in Africa.

They have played 44 world cup qualifier games collecting 16 wins, drawing 11 and losing 15 of the games.

Their last meeting with the Uganda Cranes happened in the 2017 AFCON tournament in the game that ended 1-all. Farouk Miya scored in the 70th minute before Mali’s Yann Bissouma equalized three minutes afterward.

2. Kenya

The Harambe Star as they are nicknamed, are Uganda cranes neighbors. They have also never qualified for the World Cup finals since their foundation and are ranked 106 in the world and 25th in Africa.

In their World Cup qualifiers history, they have played a total of 68 games, winning 23 of them, drawing 15 and losing the other 30 games.

Uganda and Kenya have met, in total, 77 times with Kenya winning 22, drawing 23 and Uganda clinching 32 victories.

The last encounter between the sides happened in October 2019, the match ended in a 1-all stalemate after Emma Okwi’s first-half strike was canceled out by Muguna in the second half.

3. Rwanda
The Amavubi Stars have also never participated in any World Cup finals in their history. They are coached by Vicent Mashami and sit 133rd in the world and 36th in Africa.

They have played 36 world cup qualification games in their history, picking up only 6 wins, drawing 9 and 21 of them have ended in losses.

Rwanda has met Uganda on 32 different occasions with Uganda winning 14 of them, Rwanda with 10 and the other 8 ending in draws.

The last encounter between the two happened in the 2013 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup and Uganda Cranes came out with a slim 1-0 win over the Amavubi Stars.
