FIBA World Cup Qualifiers: Uganda fall to Mali in Opener


The Uganda Men’s Basketball Team, The Silverbacks started off their FIBA Basketball 2023 World Cup Qualifiers campaign with a defeat to Mali.

The Silverbacks lost 76-66 to the West African side on Friday evening in Benguela, Angola.

The Silverbacks who turned the ball 27 times in the contest trailed from the start to the end.

Mali made a dream start to the game and took the first quarter 17-9.

Uganda staged a rally back in the second quarter to reduce the gap to only 6 points at halftime (36-30).

But Mali outscored Uganda 25-19 in the third quarter to increase their lead to 12 points (61-49) going into the last quarter of the game.

Uganda took the last 17-15 but it wasn’t enough to close the gap on Mali who won the game by a difference of 10 points.

Barcelona forward Brandon Davies led the scoring for Uganda as he had a double-double (24 points and 16 rebounds) while Titus Lual and Eric Rwahire had 12 and 11 points respectively.

Uganda, who have now lost three straight games to Mali will return to action on Saturday to take on Cape Verde.

Cape Verde defeated Nigeria 79-71 in their first game.
