FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket: Junior Gazelles bounce back with win over Nigeria

Uganda National Girls Basketball team (Junior Gazelles) bounced back from defeat to Egypt by beating Nigeria 80-64 at the FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket in Pretoria, South Africa.

Resty Nanangwe who was the MVP in the first game against Zimbabwe came up with a double double of 31points and 10rebounds.

However Christine Namyalo managed to add 21 points with enough support from Modesta Anyango’s  11 points and 8 rebounds to carry the young ladies forward.

Following their win against Nigeria and other against Zimbabwe (85-36) the Junior gazelles are top of group B for now despite their 76-53 loss to Egypt in the second game.

Final standings will depend on the other group game between Zimbabwe and Egypt.

For the Junior Silverbacks, they sit bottom of group B after losing their first two games 89-73 against to Angola and 73-50 at the hands of defending champions Egypt.

They play the final group game on Tuesday against record champions Nigeria.

Both girl’s and boy’s tournaments are set to climax on 13th and 14th September respectively with finalists assured of qualification to the FIBA U19 world cup to be played in Switzerland next year.
