Uganda’s girls U18 basketball team, the Junior Gazelles, will lose against Angola on Thursday in the Quarterfinals of the ongoing 2022 FIBA U18 Afrobasket championship in Madagascar.

The Junior Gazelles lost 57-44 to a possesive Angola team. Sylvia Nantongo and Sarah Namale who averaged 17 points and 10.3 rebounds respectively in the previous game once again put up a good display in the third quarter but it wasn’t enough.

Sylvia Nantongo and Sarah Namale scored 12 and 9 points respectively while Shilla Lamunu too put in a shift raising 8 points.

For Angola Sindalawa gathered 14 points to help her side collect a win to meet with Mali.

The team started the first quarter in good shape with Namale and Namyalo putting up majority of the points for team Uganda however much it wasn’t that perfect finishing just three points ahead of Angola 15-12.

In the second quarter, Angola bettered their transition play and stiffened their defense limiting Uganda to only five more points only for them to add 24 on their tally to make a scoreline of 36-20

In the first quarter of the second half, Uganda appeared to have got the key to unlock the Angola defence winning it 17-16 compared to the 2nd quarter which they had lost 24-5.

This put them in a better position for a comeback in the fourth and final quarter but it didn’t look like it was going to happen soon enough with a lot of tired legs on the court thus the game ending 57-44.

Before getting to this stage, Uganda had finished  third in Pool A behind Mali and Madagascar, with their only win coming against Madagascar, the host nation after losing against Algeria and Mali.

On the other hand, Angola had finished second in Pool B with two wins and a loss that came against Egypt in their opener.

Angola will play Mali in the semi-finals while Egypt will face Madagascar in the other semifinal.

Uganda will face Guinea who terribly lost to Mali 117-37 in one of the other quarter-finals in the classification matches to see who will occupy positions from 5th to 8th on Thursday 11th August 2022 at 03:03 pm (EAT)
