The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has today decided to end the 2020/21 StarTimes Uganda Premier League, a decision that sees Express FC win a seventh Uganda Premier League title, and second-placed Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) FC return to the continent after five years of no show.

The decision was taken during an emergency Executive Committee meeting held to find a solution to the second covid-19 crisis that paralysed all sports activities in the country.

The FUFA executive on Tuesday 29th June 2021 took a decision to end the 2020/21 StarTimes Uganda Premier League citing Article 18, Section 1, Sub-section C & D of the FUFA Competition rules which states that;

Where the league format due to circumstances of force majeure is not played to completion the league winner shall be determined as follows.

c) Where at least one club has played more than 75% of the league games, the following formula shall be used by TOC (Terms of Conditions) to determine the league positions.

d) Total number of points earned from the number of games played multiplied by the total number of games supposed to be played divided by the number of games played.

As a result, Express FC who last won the Uganda Premier League in 2012 win a seventh title after leading the standings with 58 points, just one ahead of URA FC and two ahead of last season’s winners Vipers Sports Club.

The Decision also means that the Red Eagles will represent Uganda in the CAF Champions League next season while URA who finishes second will return to the continent as the country’s CAF Confederation Cup representatives, a feat they last had five years ago, in 2015.

The decision also sees Kyaggwe based Kyetume FC, Malaba Youth Development Association (MYDA) FC and Kitara FC relegated to the StarTimes FUFA Big League. the country’s second-tier league.

Other considerations taken included a decision on the status of the Stanbic Uganda Cup – with the Exco insisting games will be played to the conclusion from the semis (where they stand) before the start of the 2021/22 season.

The Big League promotional playoffs will be played to determine the third team that joins Tooro United and Arua Hill into the StarTimes Uganda Premier League. However, this will only be done with clearance from the   National Council of Sports (NCS) and guidelines from the Ministry of Health regarding the Covid-19.

This is the second time the Federation has ended all football action including declaring the winner prematurely after the 2019/20 season that saw Vipers claim a fourth in their history.
