Express FC frustrated NEC FC with a disciplined defensive display to secure a goalless draw in the Uganda Premier League at MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, on Thursday.
The Red Eagles stood firm against a determined NEC side that created several promising opportunities but lacked the finishing touch to turn their efforts into goals.
Both goalkeepers played important roles in keeping the contest level, with Mathias Kigonya and Hannington Ssebwalunyo producing crucial saves as the two sides settled for a share of the spoils.
NEC threatened first in the 11th minute when Allan Mugalu rose to meet Gideon Odongo’s corner, only for Kigonya to react sharply and deny the forward.
Express responded seven minutes later through Isaac Wagoina, who broke through on goal but allowed Ssebwalunyo to close him down after a heavy first touch.
The visitors gradually grew into the game, using patient passing and quick attacking combinations to trouble the hosts. Wagoina later delivered a dangerous cross for Abas Muluya, whose volley sailed over the crossbar.
Express came close again before the break when Steven Yiga cut inside from the right and unleashed a shot that Ssebwalunyo pushed away.
NEC also had opportunities of their own, with Richard Basangwa testing Kigonya from distance, but neither side could find a breakthrough before half-time.
The hosts returned from the interval with renewed urgency. Kigonya produced one of the game’s standout moments by denying Mugalu, who attempted an acrobatic bicycle kick inside the penalty area.
NEC continued to push forward, with James Jarieko heading Odongo’s free-kick over the crossbar shortly after the restart.
However, Express remained organised at the back, with Duncan Sseninde particularly effective in limiting Basangwa’s influence.
The visitors also had a golden opportunity to snatch victory when Yiga delivered a dangerous ball into the box for Muluya, who failed to convert despite finding himself in a promising position.
Both coaches made changes in search of a winner, but the substitutions failed to produce the decisive moment.
NEC increased the pressure in the closing stages, yet Express held their defensive shape to withstand the late attacks and leave Lugogo with a valuable point.
The result leaves NEC second in the standings with 11 points from five matches, level on points with SC Villa but ahead on goal difference. Express move to five points and sit 12th.
NEC will next travel to face Kigezi HomeBoyz on October 14, while Express host UPDF at Hamz Stadium on October 15 as both teams turn their attention to their next league assignments.
