Diaspora: Ochaya assists but Onyango’s Sundowns ends Mazembe’s home record – how Ugandan professionals fared over the weekend

Saturday saw Denis Onyango’s Mamelodi Sundowns end TP Mazembe’s home run in the CAF Champions League, while in Algeria, Allan Okello helped Paradou secure a slim win in the Algerian Ligue 1. Fahad Bayo and Robert Kakeeto will be in action today with Ashdod FC and AaB Aalborg respectively.

Starting off in the Algerian Ligue 1, former KCCA FC forward, Allan Okello helped Paradou AC secure a narrow 2-1 win over USM Alger. Ahmed Nadir Benbouali scored for the home side, however, they needed a penalty in the 59th minutes from Zakaria Messibah to secure all three after conceding 55th minute from a Zakaria Benchaa penalty.

That was Paradou’s 5th win in the 16 games they have played so far and are occupying 7th position.

In the CAF Champions League, Taddeo Lwanga for Simba as they took on Saidi Kyeyune’s Al-Merrikh. Lwanga started and was cautioned as Simba SC played out to a goalless draw away in Sudan. Kyeyune did not make the matchday squad after testing positive for COVID.

Simba occupies first place in Group A of the CAF Champions League after 3 matches with 2 wins and a draw, while, Al-Merrikh has lost 2 and drawn 1, occupying the last spot. The two sides face off again on Tuesday 16th March.

South Africa giants Mamelodi Sundowns ended TP Mazembe’s 12-year unbeaten home run as they defeated The Ravens 2-1 despite being reduced to 10 men in the 73rd minute. Uganda’s Denis Onyango started in goal and played the full 90 minutes as his side, helping his side defeat another Ugandan Joseph Ochaya’s side away in Congo.

The Sundowns scored first in the second half with Peter Shalulile opening up in 67th before Ricardo Nascimento being sent off. In the event, Mazembe tried to rally back in the 82nd minute with Joseph Ochaya assisting Tresor Mputu for the leveller, but Lyle Lakay 90th ensured the Brazilians edge the Congo-based side to go 7 points clear of their second-placed opponents on the day.

Still, in group B of the CAF Champions League, Ugandan goalie Jamal Salim Magoola was on the bench as his side, Al Hilal Omdurman drew 1-all with CR Belouizdad away in Algeria. Al Hilal took the lead as early as the 3rd minute off a Mohamed Abdel Raman Yousif strike but they were unfortunate to concede a leveller in the 43rd minute courtesy of a Marcellin Koukpo goal.

Al Hilal has not won in all the three games they have played so far, but have drawn two and are third in group B of the CAF Champions League.

In Kenya, Benjamin Ochan kept a clean sheet for AFC Leopards as they claimed a 1-0 win over Nairobi City Stars in the BetKing Kenyan Premier league. The Leopards were reduced to 10-men when Robinson Kamura was sent off for a foul on Oliver Maloba, however, they managed to hold on for all three points when Oliver Ochieng struck in stoppage-time.

The Leopards are now 3rd on the log with 9 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses with 28 points. The City Stars on the other end are 9th having endured a 6th defeat in the 15 games they have played so far.

Still, in KPL, Hashim Ssempala captained his Tusker FC side to a narrow 1-0 win over Ulinzi Stars. Boniface Muchiri scored the lone goal in the second half to ensure the league leaders bagged left with maximum points and 11th win 15.

In Tanzania, Mathias Kigonya started in goal while Nicholas Wadada was still out Injured as Azam FC played out to a goalless draw with Mwadui FC in the Tanzanian Premier League.

In Zambia, Shafik Batambuze started and assisted Satly Phiri for the home sides only goal as Kabwe Warriors fell 2-1 to league leaders Zesco United in the Zambian Super Ligue.

The visitors struck first through Adrian Chama in the 39th minute before needing 39th minute from Enock Sakala to break the deadlock and win their 12th in the 20 games played so far.

That was Kabwe Warriors’ 6th loss in 21, having won 7 and drawn 8 and are standing 6th on the log.

In Morocco, Patrick Kaddu featured for his side Youssoufia as they shared spoils with table leaders, Raja Casablanca, 1-all, away from home in the Botola Pro League.

In South Africa, Moses Waiswa was an unused substitute as his side, Supersport United played out to a goalless stalemate with TS Galaxy in the DSTV Premiership.

In England, Uche Ikpeazu Mubiru started and featured 80 minutes as his side, Wycombe Wanderers suffered a 2-0 loss to Stoke City in the English Skybet Championship. Jordan Obita missed the match due to an injury.

In the English league one, Elvis Bwomono came on in the 73rd minutes as Southend United FC shared goalless spoils with Oldham Athletic.

In Scotland, Bevis Mugabi sat out once again with an Injury as his Motherwell FC side claimed a 3-1 victory over Livingston in the Scottish Premiership game.

In Denmark, Moses Opondo started and was subbed off in the 67 minutes as his side, Odense Boldkub suffered a 2-0 loss to Vejle BK in the Danish Superliga.

Allan Sousa and German Onugkha scored for Vejle in the 60th and 89th minutes respctively.

In Israel, Luwagga Kizito started and featured full-time for Hapoel Kfar Saba as they play out to a goalless stalemate with Hapoel Haifa in the Israel Premier League.

In Germany, Herbert Bockhorn played the last 10 minutes of the match as his side, VFL Bochum secured a 2-1 win over Fürth in the Bundesliga 2. Anthony Losilla opened the scoring for Bochum in the 7th minute and needed a 61st-minute penalty from Robert Zulj to take all three points after letting in a leveller from Anton Stach in the 18th minute.

In the Czech Republic, Edrisa Lubega didn’t make the matchday squad as his new side, Pribram FK succumbed to a 2-0 loss to Liberec in the Czech Republic First League.

Jakub Pesek and Michal Sadilek scored for Liberec in the 61st and 62nd minutes respectively.

In the Czech National Football League, Isaac Muleme was introduced in the 73rd minutes as his side, Viktoria Zizkov suffered a 2-1 loss to Chrudim. Petr Rybicka netted a brace for Chrudim in the 7th and 28th minutes before Ladislav Muzik added a 3rd from a penalty in the 51st minute. Igor Sukennik scored Zizkov’s consolation in the 54th minute.

Zizkov stands 6th in the Czech National League standings with 6 wins and 6 losses in 13 games while Chrudim is 3rd having won the 7th game in 13 they have played so far.

Fahad Bayo is expected to be in the starting lineup as his side Ashdod SC takes on Hapoel Hadera in the Israel Premier League game at the Yud Alef Stadium.

Robert Kakeeto will be in action on Monday when his side, AaB Aalborg takes on SønderjyskE in the Danish Super Ligue.
