CHAN Qualifiers: Late Travis Mutyaba goal hands Uganda advantage over Tanzania

Youngster Travis Mutyaba came off the bench to score the winner for Uganda Cranes as they overcame Tanzania 1-0 in the CHAN qualifiers first leg game played at Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Tanzania on Sunday evening.

Travis was introduced on by Cranes head coach Milutin Sredojevic ‘Micho’ in the 70th minute for Milton Karisa and in the 86th minute he netted the game’s only goal when he stole the ball from Tanzania’s Mohammad Hussein to dribble past his marker and shot past a helpless Aishi Manula.

Tanzania almost levelled matters just moments later but Daniel Lyanga was judged to have been offside before putting the ball into the back of the net.

Aside from the Uganda Cranes goals and Tanzania’s offside effort, the game was dull and far from entertaining as both side struggled to create meaningful chances upfront.

With the narrow 1-0 victory, Micho’s side take an advantage into the second leg which will be played at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende in Uganda on 3rd September.

The aggregate winner between Uganda and Tanzania will qualify for the CHAN finals slated for January, 2023 in Algeria.
