Hippos beats Burundi 6-1

Uganda Hippos cruised past  Burundi 6-1 during a group B CECAFA U20 tournament encounter at the Sheikh Amri Abeid Memorial Stadium in Arusha, Tanzania.

Two goals by Ivan Bogere and Isma Mugulusi each, and a goal apiece by Najib Yiga and Joseph Kizza Bukenya were enough to inspire the Hippos to their CECAFA U20 tournament victory after a goal-less statement with South Sudan on Monday

Much was made of the Hippos after their devastating goalless draw with South Sudan on Monday as the pressure was already piling up on the U20. They needed to respond, and they did just that in style.

Ivan Bogere gave Morley Byekwaso’s side the lead in the 42nd minute and Just two minutes later, Yiga doubled the lead with a clinical finish to double Uganda’s lead before the half-time break.

The second half marked a continuation of events from the closing minutes of the first half. The Hippos returned much stronger and kept on pushing everything to extend their lead. They eventually got rewarded with a penalty after a handball incident in the forbidden area by a Burundi defender.

Ivan Bogere stepped up and calmly put the ball into the back of the net to make it three.

A minute on, forward Isma Mugulusi finally got his name onto the scoresheet, before completing his brace in the 80th minute with a neat finish.

Having come on in the 66th minute for Richard Basangwa, Kizza made it 6 for the Hippos in the 86th minute.

Kevin Icoyitungiye got Burundi’s consolation goal just at the death of the game to deny Jack Komakech a clean sheet.

Uganda Hippos now move to four points in two games and are now waiting for the result between Burundi and South Sudan on Friday to confirm qualification to the semi-finals of the 2020 CECAFA U20 tournament.

Only the winner of this tournament gets to qualify for the AFCON U-20 tournament set in Mauritius next year.
