The Uganda senior men’s national basketball team, the Silverbacks claimed their second win of the 2021 AfroBasket qualifiers in Egypt, taming Cape Verde 101-98  on Sunday night at the Ittihad Arena.

The Silverbacks came into this game with supreme confidence, having picked up their first win of the qualifiers on Saturday night, edging  Morocco 94-90 in an intense game on day two.

Big-man Ishmail Wainwright recorded a first-half double-double to propel the Silverbacks into a 9-point lead before the second half. Wainwright had a game-high 36 points, but 22 of them came in the first half.

Jimmy Enabu and Deng Deu had 17 points each while Robinson Opondo shot in 16.

The Silverbacks suffered a scare in the second half as Joel Almeida’s inspired Cape Verde ran to a 9-points lead, eventually outscoring Uganda at 33-22 in the third quarter to take a two-point lead coming into the fourth.

But, the Silverbacks did take the fourth quarter 27-22, inspired by Wainwright three-pointer and Enabu’s easy layup to reclaim Silverbacks lead with two minutes on the clock

Jeffrey Nunes Xavier and Joel Almeida had 24 points each for Cape Verde while Ivan Almeida finished the game with 16 points.

The Silverbacks will now head into the second qualification window in February 2021 with two wins garnered against Morocco and Cape Verde with the top three teams from Group E set to qualify for the FIBA AfroBasket finals in Kigali, Rwanda.
