AFCON U20: Uganda share spoils with 10-man Congo

The Uganda National Under-20 Football Team, the Hippos have played out to a 2-2 draw with 10-man Congo Brazavile in a group B TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nation U20 game played at Suez Canal Stadium on Thursday.

Congo struck first, five minutes into the game when Josna Epifani Loulendo scored with a towering header at the near post from a corner.

Uganda found a quick equaliser from Titus Ssematimba in the 11th minute when the Wakiso Giants attacker capitalize on poor defending by Congo to pounce in from close range.

The Hippos went ahead in the 33rd minute through Saidi Mayanja who was found unmarked in the box by Isma Mugulusi to take home the second.

After the halftime whistle, Congo got reduced to 10 men after defender Claude Gisaurvel Negongara got sent off by Center referee for kicking Mayanja at the bottom.

The Hippos failed to use this man’s advantage in the second half as they looked awful both offensively and defensive in the closing 45 minutes.

With 17 minutes left on the clock, Congo got their second of the game through defender Arnauvy Princide Mombouli who rose highest from a corner to nod home the Congolese equaliser.

Substitute Travis Mutyaba had a chance to restore Hippo’s lead at almost the death of the game, but the youngster agonizingly opted for a pass rather than to shoot at goal.

With the draw, Uganda remains top of the log with four points garnered in their two games after having beaten CAR 2-1 in their opener.

The Hippos are level on points with Congo, who also secured a win in their opener against South Sudan

In their last group Uganda will play South Sudan next while Congo will battle CAR.
