In their first match since the death of SC Villa captain David Owori, the Jogoos rose to the occasion with a commanding 3–1 victory over Maroons at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, on Tuesday evening to book their place in the FUFA Super 8 semi-finals.
The result saw Villa complete a 4–2 aggregate victory in the quarter-final tie, giving the record league champions a fitting way to honour their fallen captain.
The match was played in an emotional atmosphere as the football fraternity paid tribute to Owori. A minute’s silence was observed before kick-off, while play was briefly halted again in the 15th minute in honour of the defender.
Villa made the perfect start, taking the lead in the seventh minute when Frank Ssebuufu tapped home from close range after being set up by Godfrey Lubangakene.
The Jogoos doubled their advantage before the break through Najib Yiga, who finished a flowing team move initiated by Patrick Kakande down the left flank.
Villa continued to dominate after the restart and came close to adding a third in the 55th minute when Isaac Mpagi connected with Kakande’s cross, but Maroons goalkeeper Amir Nalugoda produced an excellent save.
The third goal eventually arrived in the 63rd minute when substitute Andrew Otim calmly finished from Reagan Mpande’s well-weighted delivery to put Villa in firm control.
Maroons pulled one back late through Marvin Oshaba, but the strike proved only a consolation as Villa comfortably held on to secure their place in the last four.
The Jogoos will now face NEC FC in the semi-finals on Friday for a place in the final, while Maroons will take on Entebbe UPPC in the classification match.
